Without water, there can be no life on this planet. We all must have access to clean and fresh water. But the water found naturally has so many impurities that it’s not possible to drink it as it is. You need to filter the water before it can be safe for consumption. That’s where a water filtration system comes in.

But what exactly is a water filtration system, and how does it work? Let’s find out.

Water Filtration System

A water filtration system used in households is generally installed atop or under the counter. They can also be installed under the sink. They’re great for eliminating any harmful impurities from water, such as chlorine, cadmium, mercury, iron, arsenic, lead, barium, etc.

Types of Water Filtration Systems

There are different types of water filtration systems that operate on a certain type of principle. Here are some of the most commonly used water filtration systems:

  1. Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis is the most commonly used phenomenon in a water filtration system. It’s based on a natural process called osmosis. In osmosis, the solvent moves from low concentration to higher concentration. In reverse osmosis, the opposite happens. So, impure water can be filtered using reverse osmosis.

In the reverse osmosis process, a semi-permeable membrane is used that has the tiniest of pores which only allow water to pass through. Any impurities, including bacteria, sodium, dissolved salts, and fluoride, are all left behind as the semi-permeable membrane doesn’t allow them to pass through.

They can easily remove 95% of contaminants from the water, making it safe for drinking and cooking. But after a certain period, these filters wear out and need to be changed, so you get pure drinking water all the time.

  1. Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon filters are generally used as a supplement to improve the water purity of already filtered water. They bind all the toxins present in water.

Activated carbon filters are used for getting rid of contaminants such as chlorine to improve the water quality. They work by absorbing the impurities.

They have a long life, so you don’t need to change the filters as frequently. Some activated carbon filters need to be changed only once a year.

  1. UV Sterilization Filters

If you want to get rid of all bacteria and microbes from your water, a UV sterilization filter is what you’re looking for. You can get pure drinking water from these filters that can kill off any harmful bacteria, protozoa, and viruses that might be present.

They’re the most effective for getting the purest water out of all the water filtration systems.

  1. Solar-Powered Filtration

As the name indicates, solar-powered filters use energy from the sun to purify water. To be more specific, they utilize solar energy (i.e., sunlight) and convert it into usable energy, which then filters the water.

Since solar energy is involved, they use solar panels, which means they aren’t suitable indoors. They’re generally used outdoors.

The great thing about these solar filters is that they’re super easy to maintain because they don’t have batteries. You don’t need to clean them deeply, plus they’re the most eco-friendly option. The only drawback is that their use is limited to the outdoors.

The capacity of a Water Filtration System

The capacity of water filtration systems varies from system to system. If you opt for a high-end water filtration system, it can have a capacity of 4000 gallons, but it might go up to 1 million gallons.

Based on the capacity, the flow rate of your filtration system is adjusted. The flow rate is measured in gallons per minute and can be anywhere between 0.5 gallons to 20 gallons per minute. Generally, higher flow rates are required if you want a system that the whole house can use.

Some systems measure the flow rate in gallons per day. But these systems aren’t ideally used in homes. They’re mainly suited for filter systems used in outdoor activities.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking to install your water filter system, you need to hire a reliable water filtration company first. Before you get your system installed, make sure you ask the company which kind of filtration system they use so you at least know how they work. They might use more than one filtration system for completely purifying water.
